Brockwell Energy's North Kyle Wind Farm in East Ayrshire is now fully operational, marking a major milestone in the transformation of a former coal mining site into one of Scotland's largest onshore wind farms. Located within North Kyle Forest, the 220.5 MW wind farm comprises 49 turbines and is expected to produce the annual electricity consumption of around 186,600 homes.
Recognised across the industry
North Kyle's delivery has been recognised with three industry awards. At the inaugural National Wind Energy Awards 2026 in London, the project won both Project of the Year (Overall) and Onshore Construction Project of the Year, scoring the highest mark of any single project across all three wind project categories. The independent judging panel highlighted the project's execution excellence and its combination of major brownfield regeneration with successful delivery.
This followed the Sustainable Development Award at the Scottish Green Energy Awards 2025, where North Kyle was a finalist in two categories, recognised by Scottish Renewables for its approach to renewable energy generation alongside land regeneration.
From coalfields to clean energy
The completion of North Kyle represents more than the delivery of new renewable generating capacity. Developed on land significantly affected by historic coal mining activity, the project has provided an opportunity to support the restoration and regeneration of the site while bringing it back into productive use.
Restoration works include the removal of legacy haul roads, bunds and backfill associated with previous mining activity, alongside the reintroduction of topsoil to support future planting and landscape restoration. Brockwell Energy has also committed £600,000 towards the planting of native broadleaf trees, alongside wider measures designed to enhance biodiversity across the site.
The project demonstrates the potential for renewable energy development to play a wider role in regenerating former industrial land, replacing the legacy of fossil fuel extraction with clean electricity generation and long-term environmental improvements.
Delivering long-term benefits
Representing an investment of approximately £300 million, North Kyle will make a significant contribution to Scotland's renewable electricity generation and Net Zero ambitions, while continuing to support environmental restoration and investment in the surrounding area throughout its operational life.
The project will deliver over £65 million in community benefit funding across its operational life, administered by the 9CC Group, a charitable trust bringing together nine community councils across the former East Ayrshire coalfield. This builds on engagement undertaken throughout the project's development and construction, and on the local employment and supply chain activity generated during the build.
